After Holy Communion

Prayer of St Thomas Aquinas

(Thirteenth Century)

I give You thanks, O holy Lord, Father almighty, eternal God, who has vouchsafed, not for any merits of mine, but solely out of the condescension of Your mercy, to satisfy me a sinner, Your unworthy servant, with the precious Body and Blood of Your Son our Lord Jesus Christ. I pray that this holy Communion be not to me a condemnation to punishment, but a saving plea to forgiveness. May it be to me the armour of faith and the shield of good will. May it be the emptying out of my vices, the extinction of all concupiscence and lust, the increase of charity and patience, of humility and obedience, and of all virtues; a strong defence against the snares of all enemies, visible and invisible; the perfect quieting of all my evil impulses, both fleshly and ghostly; a firm cleaving to You, the one true God; and a pledge of a blessed destiny. And I beseech You, that You would vouchsafe to bring me, a sinner, to that in effable banquet, where You, with Your Son and the Holy Spirit, are to Your saints true light, fulness of content, eternal joy, gladness without alloy and perfect bliss. Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

Obsecro Te

Priests who say this prayer in thanksgiving after Mass, if possible kneeling, may obtain the pardon of any faults or mistakes of which he may have been guilty as the result of human frailty during the celebration of Mass. (Pius X, 1912).

I beseech You, most sweet Lord Jesus Christ, grant that Your Passion may be to me a power by which I may be strengthened, protected and defended. May Your wounds be to me food and drink, by which I may be nourished, inebriated and overjoyed. May the sprinkling of Your Blood be to me an ablution for all my sins. May Your death prove to me life everlasting, and Your cross be to me an eternal glory. In these be my refreshment, my joy, my preservation, and sweetness of heart. Who lives and reigns world without end. Amen.

Offering of all the Masses in the world

I unite myself with every Mass which at this time is being offered throughout the whole world. I place them in the hands of Mary, the Mediatrix of all grace, that she may obtain by the presentation of the Blood of Christ to the most Holy Trinity, the deliverance of souls from purgatory, relief for the sick and dying, the conversion of infidels and sinners, and the perseverance of all the faithful.
